History

BHP Group, being a very successful and expanding family owned enterprise, strives to cater to the competitive demands of the 21st Century, capturing Brand Loyalty and Goodwill from their customers.

Founded in the late 1960's, BHP Group has a proud heritage and a legacy over 40 years. The Founder, the Late Mr. B. H. Peiris, father of a family of four, was an experienced and successful Tea Planter, in the Rathnapura District. This is the region famous for Sri Lanka's Low Grown Teas. Owning a few tea estates in the neighboring villages, his entry into the tea manufacturing industry was when he invested in a very small factory in Dellwala.

Thus began the journey of BHP Group, turning green leaf in the field into a distinctive drink in a tea cup. Subsequently, the foundation stone was laid for Nawalakanda Tea Factory in 1984 and, by the 29th of November 1987, the factory was commissioned for commercial production.

Having supported the commitment, interest and good entrepreneurial skills of his son towards the tea industry, the business was passed on to his son B H. Anura Peiris in 1991. Since then the expansion of BHP Group's fleet of factories continued to Wewelkandura Tea Factory in 1994.
